Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar hasn't been ruled out as a replacement at Manchester United.

United have not ruled out hiring Van der Sar or a similar outside candidate as Ed Woodward's replacement. Woodward announced his decision to leave Old Trafford earlier in the week. And while Richard Arnold appears the likeliest successor, the Red Devils may go for somebody else instead.

ESPN says United could yet go for Van der Sar, with the appointment of an outside candidate 'not ruled out'.

The Dutchman signed from Fulham in the summer transfer window of 2005, replacing Tim Howard between the sticks.

And Van der Sar proved to be a major hit during his time at the Theatre of Dreams, helping the club win four Premier League titles.

Van der Sar has been working at Ajax since hanging up his boots, earning plaudits for his astute work over in Amsterdam.

But while United haven't ruled out going for him, the report does make it clear Arnold is the 'obvious choice' to take over.
