Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits he was close to speaking with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola regarding the European Super League.

Arteta was the assistant manager to Guardiola at City before he joined Arsenal as their head coach.

Both clubs were founding members of the now defunct European Super League breakaway competition, which was announced on Sunday and terminated two days later.

Asked if he spoke with Pep, Arteta told reporters: "I was going to, but again, by the time that was happening, it didn't even give us time because we knew what was happening.

"It was clear that we were going to get out of it and it wasn't necessary."

Asked if he agreed with Guardiola's views that it would not be a sport without competition, he added: "Well, the main reason why we are here is because we have the uncertainty of winning or losing, and we can dream.

"We can dream about winning against anybody, earning the possibility to be in a better place, and as well, the risk of being in a worse place, and that's what keeps everybody alive."
