Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old was jailed eight years and two strokes of the cane for physical sexual harassment against a nine-year-old girl. 

Roger Gamilus changed his plea and pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ummu Khaltom Abdul Samad, to the charge against him during the continuation of his trial.

He committed the offence by touching the minor’s private part at 9pm on July 26, 2019 in a house in a village in Kundasang, Ranau.

The offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.

The court ordered Roger to serve the jail sentence from the date of his conviction.

Several witnesses had been called during the hearing before Roger changed his plea to guilty.

In another court, a 26-year-old man was sentenced to five years’ jail and ordered to be caned once for taking syabu repeatedly.

Mohd Izan Mulah admitted before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus, to the charge against him.

He was found taking the drug at 1pm on Jan 19, 2020 after his urine tested positive for drugs at the Kota Belud police station. Mohd Izan has two previous convictions for taking drugs in 2014 and 2019.

He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Jan 19, 2020.

After completing the jail sentence, Mohd Izan was placed under police supervision for three years.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mas Izatty Lokman appeared for the prosecution while Mohd Izan was not represented.
