Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes the club must have an excellent transfer window to close the gap to the top teams in Europe.

The Red Devils lost the Europa League final on penalties to Villarreal on Wednesday, failing to end a four year trophy drought.

Villarreal took the lead in the first half, before United came back in the second period through Edinson Cavani.

But after 90 minutes and extra time, the game went to a penalty shootout, after which the Spanish side emerged victorious.

"This window is massive, it's a massive window for United now. The recruitment team, the owners, the CEO, the manager, the staff need to go out and recruit the right players that fit the bill, to take this team from getting to finals and can't get over the line, to finishing the job," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"It needs to be the right people, the right characters, and good enough players that add value to this team. For instance, we always talk about Virgil van Dijk being the catalyst for Liverpool over the last few years. What had he won in England before?

"He was at Southampton, they weren't fighting for titles or in Europe. It's the right characters, the right people who fit the team, the right profile to take you on and make the team better."
