Villarreal have won the Europa League final with a gripping penalty shootout win over Manchester United.
The scores were tied after normal time following goals from Gerard Moreno and Edinson Cavani.
Moreno gave Villarreal the lead after 29 minutes thanks to some awful defending from Victor Lindelof.
Dani Parejo floated a free-kick into the box from 40 yards out, and Moreno managed to get away from Lindelof to finish a half-volley past David De Gea.
But United had their equaliser shortly after half-time when Cavani showed his experience to score in an empty net.
Villarreal failed to clear Luke Shaw's corner, with the ball falling to Marcus Rashford whose volley across the box found Cavani for a simple tap-in.
VAR were consulted for a possible offside, but the wily Cavani managed to get himself onside before finishing.
Once the final whistle blew, the extra-time period always looked as though it would finish with a penalty shootout.
What ensued at the spot-kicks was an unbelievable sight, with neither team missing a penalty until the goalkeepers had to take their turn.
With Villarreal up 11-10, De Gea saw his kick saved by opposite number Gerónimo Rulli.
The win sparked wild celebrations from Villarreal and their small number of fans in the Gdansk stands, with the likeable club from Spain's east coast having now won the first trophy in their history.
Securing Champions League next season was just the cherry on top for 'The Yellow Submarine'.
The legend of Unai Emery and the Europa League also continues, with the former Arsenal manager claiming his fourth crown.
Questions will be asked of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who failed to make a substitution until the first half of extra-time. He also used his final two subs with just minutes remaining before penalties.
After finishing their season without a trophy, Solskjaer and his players will be hoping this setback spurs them on for the 2021/22 campaign.
