SHAH ALAM, June 18 — Youths craze towards online video games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang resulted in Selangor Xtiv Virtual e-sport getting the highest numbers of participation among all games offered in the Selangor Xtiv Virtual 2021.

State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said from March until yesterday, that category recorded 99,020 entries, which is more than 95 per cent of the 103,859 individuals registered.

“The phenomenon of the games among young people has made it the main choice. Even if it is not being offered, these games will still be chosen because it is trending now.

“We are confident that the number of participants in this category will continue to increase with the enforcement of MCO (movement control order) that limited people’s movement,” he told SelangorKini.

The e-sport category includes PUBG, Mobile Legends Bang Bang, Call of Duty Mobile, Pro Evolution Soccer 2021 and FIFA Pro Club.

Mohd Khairuddin said his team is confident that the virtual sports event would surpass its target of getting more than 450,000 participants.

Selangor Xtiv Virtual 2021 offers seven types of games starting from March to December with a total prize pool of RM411,680.

Last year, the programme received an unexpected response involving 250,631 entries and 18 million views on social media platforms.
