Netherlands boss Frank De Boer was disappointed at the red card given to defender Matthijs De Ligt as his side crashed out of Euro 2020.

The Dutch went into their game against Czech Republic in the round of 16 on Sunday as favorites to progress to the quarter finals.

However, they never got going in the game and did not create enough clear cut chances.

Centre-back De Ligt purposefully handled the ball in an attempt to stop the Czech Republic from being through on goal.

The referee initially gave a yellow, but after a VAR review the Juventus star was given a straight red.

"We created few opportunities but this sport is played at a top level," De Boer told reporters post-game.

"One moment can turn the world upside down. These are hard lessons to take.

"I'm responsible for this defeat at the end of the day and I will take a look at the mirror.

"It wasn't our best game but it's not like we did not dominate the game."
