England's slim victory over Austria has been marred by an injury to Liverpool left-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Three Lions' warm-up campaign for Euro 2020 got off to a winning start thanks to a goal from Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka.
17-year-old Jude Bellingham, making his first start for his country, thought he'd broken the deadlock but his flick on was ruled out due to a foul from Tyrone Mings in the build-up.
Harry Kane then had the best chance of the game so far on the half-hour mark, testing goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann from a tight angle.
But it was Saka who eventually put England in front at Riverside Stadium.
A tackle on Jack Grealish from Austria skipper Marcel Sabitzer saw the ball land in the path of Saka, who finished wisely from a tight angle.
Jordan Pickford, Southgate's favoured goalkeeper, then proved his worth by tipping Sabitzer's fine strike onto the bar.
Then with two minutes to go, Southgate's nightmares were realised when Alexander-Arnold limped off.
The 22-year-old, who surprised many when he was included in the final 26-man squad, clutched his left thigh after a left-footed clearance with nobody around him.
England next face Romania on Sunday before their Euro campaign gets underway against Croatia on Sunday June 13.
