Everton assistant manager Duncan Ferguson rejected the chance to follow Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.
Ferguson, 49, was part of Ancelotti's coaching staff on Merseyside and is said to have been offered a spot alongside him again at the Bernabeu after his surprise departure this week.
English press reports state if Ferguson was to leave the Blues, it would be for a No1 job.
Ferguson enjoys a cult-like status at the club as a result of a playing career there that stretched across 10 years in total, and from his time working as a staff member.
And he may be forced to step in once again with Everton currently without a manager after Ancelotti quit to return to Madrid.
The decision caused shockwaves across the club, and Ancelotti took the key members from his inner circle, including his son Davide, with him.
