A Manchester United fan told the club's co-owner Joel Glazer that the club is now a "laughing stock."
Glazer attended the club's fans' forum meeting for the first time since his family bought the club in 2005.
He appeared at the event as a result of the negative publicity towards the club and owners in recent months.
Fans were furious when United were among 12 teams that joined a now defunct European Super League.
Chas Banks, who is 71 and the secretary of the Manchester United Disabled Supporters' Association, said: "We used to be the club that others measured themselves by - on the field and off the field.
"And the problem is now, people are laughing at us, Joel.
"We've become a laughing stock. There are memes on the internet all the time. And there's nothing worse. People say bad things about you, but there's nothing worse than being laughed at."
