England manager Gareth Southgate says that Brighton defender Ben White was aware he would not be going to Euro 2020.

The center back was among eight players who Southgate removed from the team's preliminary squad for the competition.

Southgate has now cut the squad to the 26-man party that will be going to the tournament, which begins in less than two weeks.

It appears White, Everton's Ben Godfrey and Sheffield United's Aaron Ramsdale were never in contention for the main squad.

He told reporters during a press conference about the players who were told they would not be going to the tournament: "You never want to give bad news.

"It is lovely to give people debuts and bring people into the squad for the first time but it is much harder to deliver bad news.

"This time, there were three boys who knew they were coming in for the experience of training with us and for these two matches, and who knows what might happen.

"But they have trained really well."
