Manchester United are discussing an off-field role with Juan Mata.
Sport says Mata is seen by United's top brass as a future board member and the club are keen for him to stay.
The veteran has been linked with a return to Valencia.
The 33-year-old made just five appearances in the Premier League last term but is still seen as having a role in the squad, it is stated.
If the agreement is reached then Mata will stay as part of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad until 2022 - meaning he'll have spent nine years at the Theatre of Dreams.
