Manchester United have been warned that signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid will not be an easy process.
The French centre-back is not signing a new deal with the Spanish giants, while his current contract expires next summer.
The Red Devils want a new center back to add to the summer signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Real will hold talks with Varane's agents very soon.
"The situation is that Real Madrid are waiting to talk with his agents," he said on his Here We Go podcast.
"But the feeling is that Varane wants to try something different.
"This is the situation, but that's not decided yet because Real Madrid will try to talk with Varane and convince him to sign a new contract.
"But the player wants to try something new, that's why Manchester United are interested and have had direct contact with Real Madrid.
"At the moment there's no agreement between Manchester United and Real Madrid. They're talking, but it's not at an advanced stage.
"They think personal terms won't be an issue, but it's up to see what Real Madrid will ask for.
"When you are negotiating with Real Madrid for a player like this, nothing is easy."
