The American was out with a hip issue for several months but is now fit and eager to impress.
The source claims that Sunderland boss Lee Johnson will run the rule over Lichaj during preseason before deciding whether to offer him a permanent contract.
Lichaj is appealing to Sunderland as he can play as a right back and left back.
