MIRI – Desperate families flying the white flag on the outskirts of the city here have caught the attention of police, Rela, and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Today, volunteers from these agencies visited dozens of households in Sg Baong and Tukau to give food aid.

Police and Rela personnel visited homes in Sg Baong, while ministry employees headed to Tukau, about 30km south of Miri city.

Joe Azmi Jamil, the ministry enforcement head in Miri, and his team presented food items to at least four dozen families living near a construction site.

“We will do what we can to help those in desperate need,” he told reporters.

White flags are being flown in various Sarawak areas, but especially in Kuching, Sibu and Miri, which are among the worst-hit districts by Covid-19.

Many residents, among them daily wage earners, are facing financial hardship amid the pandemic.

The #benderaputih online campaign calls on those in need to fly a white flag outside their home, so that members of the community can provide assistance. – The Vibes, July 7, 2021
