Most of us grew up listening to the usual beauty-related adage. Whether it's about makeup or water intake having to do with your skin issues, experts are lifting the lid behind these myths to expose what's real, and what's not.

Myth 1: Breakouts are caused by makeup

Most beauty influencers will advocate the 'less is more' makeup approach, by saying that caking your face will lead to acne.

Actually, that's not entirely the case. Breakouts can be caused by numerous different factors, including how frequent you cleanse your face or the type of makeup you're using.

If you want to go a safer route, experts highly recommend using mineral-based makeup, which are more gentle on the skin.

Myth 2: Only teenagers get breakouts

Raging hormones and teenagers aside, breakouts can happen to even older adults because age isn't the factor, but hormones and lifestyle are.

Myth 3: Blackheads can be easily scrubbed away

Blackheads aren't plain dirts, and you can't scrub them away completely. Again, this has something to do with hormones producing too much sebum oil.

While a topical scrub is good, it's only effective to the extent of removing the top portion of the blackheads (not internally). Instead, use products that contain BHA (salicylic acid) which can exfoliate the inner pore lining.

Myth 4: Dry skin can be treated by drinking lots of water

No matter how many litres of water you consume per day, your dry skin will likely remain the same.

As dry skin is actually an external problem, experts suggest treating it with products that contain mineral oil.

Myth 5: Anti-wrinkle products are 100% effective

Unfortunately, the elixir of youth doesn't exist despite the oversaturated anti-wrinkle products in the market. If there's any, then plastic surgeons and dermatologists won't exist!
