However, D'Mani Mellor and Charlie McNeill netted for United in the latter stages of the game to rescue a point.
Many supporters were at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium for the game, which was an entertaining contest between two evenly matched sides.
United welcomed Mellor back into the fold after an absence with injury, while defender Paul McShane is back as a player-coach.
