Former Manchester United forward Norman Whiteside says he always felt at home with Everton.

Despite having scored that winning goal against Everton in the FA Cup final four years earlier, Whiteside recalls that bonding with Blues fans still came naturally to him after his £600,000 transfer to Merseyside in 1989.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “I got on brilliantly with the Stretford End at Old Trafford because I was a home-grown lad, a bit like Wayne Rooney at Everton.

“As soon as I arrived at Everton, the Gwladys Street took to me because I'm a working class kid, no big-time Charlie.

“I'd go out in Liverpool, mix with everybody and have a good time.

“I had the dodgy knee but they knew whenever possible, I'd give 100% for Everton when I played.

“I enjoyed a real rapport with the fans and I still go now, mostly when United play there, I always get a good invite.

“It will be interesting to see what happens with the move to the new stadium but it's a fantastic club.

"I know you've heard it a million times, but it genuinely is a real family club."
