3 Covid-19 patients flee Perak quarantine centre, 2 found

TAIPING – Of the three patients who fled from the Covid-19 low-risk treatment and quarantine centre at the Rakan Muda Complex here, two have been located.

Taiping police chief Osman Mamat said the two men were found hiding in a house in Kamunting, about 3km from the centre.

“We received a report from a medical officer about the escape of the trio after they had registered at the centre at 7.15pm yesterday (Wednesday). The individuals, aged between 20 and 35, were supposed to undergo a 10-day quarantine at the centre.

“The search operation around Taiping resulted in two of them being found at 12.50am today (yesterday), before Health Ministry personnel came and took them back to the centre.”

Osman said police are still tracking down the third patient, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code and Section 22(B) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

He also denied a viral WhatsApp message that claimed the escaped patients were spotted in areas around the market, banks and public places.

“Whatever that has gone viral is not true at all, and the public is advised to not spread fake news that can disrupt public order.” – Bernama, August 20, 2021
