MIRI – Sarawak notched two new unwanted records, including a new daily high of 1,566 Covid-19 cases and 272 cases of the Delta variant today.
In view of the high numbers, the State Disaster Management Committee secretariat announced that those not fully vaccinated will not be allowed to go to work.
“Due to the new high number of infection cases and the increase in the Delta variant threat in Sarawak, only those fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccines are permitted to go to their workplaces or operate their businesses.
“There are 1,653,259 people who have completed both doses as of today, which translates to 80.9% of the adult population,” the secretariat stated in a press statement.
Concerns over Sarawak’s case numbers for the Delta variant are obvious, as Selangor has the second-highest Delta variant cases at 31, paling in comparison with Sarawak’s 272 cases.
The secretariat further stated that the Kuching district recorded 731 fresh infections.
Bau saw 238 new cases, Lundu 175, Sibu 37, Miri 34, and Bintulu 29 while the rest of the districts recorded at least a dozen cases and above.
The Covid-19 total death toll in the state also shot up to 487 today, with the latest death involving a man aged 73 in Serian Hospital.
There are also five new clusters recorded statewide, with 180 cumulative infections. – The Vibes, August 16, 2021
