Manchester United legend Gary Neville says Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are not enough to turn Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side into title contenders.

The Red Devils spent big money to recruit right-winger Sancho, while four-time Champions League winner Varane was brought in to play alongside Harry Maguire at centre-back.

But Neville believes his former club must sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane - who is being courted by rivals Manchester City - if they want to solidify their title credentials.

He told Sky Sports: "My gut feeling is that they (Sancho and Varane) won't have the same impact as Van Dijk and Alisson to 95 points to win the league. I still think they'll be short.

"Chelsea have strengthened with (Romelu) Lukaku, Man City in for (Jack) Grealish and if they get Kane there's a massive problem for Man Utd.

"I don't know why Man United aren't going that extra step this transfer window. They've always gone after the best English player in the Premier League historically. With Martial, James, Lingard potentially offloaded, why aren't they going in for Harry Kane?

"If Harry Kane entered Man Utd you get to 94, 95 points, they still have to replace Cavani and Martial. Martial is not up to it, Cavani's getting on. Why not get the man now? I don't know if they can win the league with Sancho and Varane."
