Tottenham have reached an agreement with Atalanta for Cristian Romero.

Reports from Argentina have stated that Spurs are closing in on the centre back, with £4m in bonuses apparently agreed on top of the flat initial £43m fee.

The 23-year-old played for the Argentina side which won the South American competition Copa America, meaning he is yet to return to pre-season training with the Serie A side.

Cash-strapped Barcelona were also understood to be interested, but given the parlous state of the club's finances, they would prefer a loan with option to buy and could not match the North London side's initial up-front offer.

Atalanta signed Romero from Juventus on a two-year loan with an option to buy, which they can activate before selling on immediately to Nuno's side.
