Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is the new England Under-21s captain, according to manager Lee Carsley.

The 21-year-old, who signed for Palace from Chelsea for roughly £18 million in the summer, will wear the armband for the duration of the 2023 European Championship Qualifying campaign.

Guehi's stock has risen significantly since his move, which was a surprise to many, who believed he could have challenged for a first team spot at Chelsea.

"Mark will lead the squad for the whole campaign," said Carsley.

"He is a player I've know for two or three years and straight away I was impressed with how mature he is, the way he talks about the game and influences the players off the pitch.

"The example he sets off the pitch as well as on it made it an easy choice.

"We have a lot of leaders in the team and in terms of the way he handled play in the Championship for Swansea and now at Crystal Palace, he is a player who was ready for the responsibility."
