Leeds United have appealed against Pascal Struijk's red card received in defeat to Liverpool.

Struijk was sent off by referee Craig Pawson after VAR intervention, with Harvey Elliott suffering a dislocated ankle.

He faces a three-match ban if the red card is upheld but if the Yorkshire club are successful he will be available for Friday's trip to Newcastle.

The Belgian took to social media to insist he had meant no harm to the teenager, who also defended the centre back.

Struijk said on Instagram: "In today's game something happened that I would never wish on anyone.

"Harvey Elliott, my thoughts are with you. I'm gutted and never meant for this to happen. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back on the pitch soon."

Elliott then responded with his own post: "Wasn't his fault whatsoever!

"Neither was it a red card just a freak accident but these things happen in football. I'll be back stronger 100%. Thanks for all the support."
