Aston Villa assistant manager Craig Shakespeare says the players were left frustrated after defeat to Carabao Cup opponents Chelsea.

A much-changed side created a host of chances during normal time before eventually going down on penalties.

Shakespeare later said: We're disappointed to go out. We came here with a game plan and we picked a team that needed minutes.

“At times, Chelsea's superiority in terms of possession meant we had to hang in there at times in the second half.

“The overall performance and chances we created, the lads can be very, very pleased with. However, they're disappointed in the changing room to go out."

Cameron Archer stole the headlines with a hat-trick in the previous round against Barrow and he netted again at Stamford Bridge to send the match to spot kicks.

Shakespeare added: “Cameron's come from nowhere. From catching the eye in pre-season to scoring the hat-trick at Barrow.

“He can be really pleased with his overall performance today - the work that he did without the ball and the work he did to stop them playing through the lines.

“He scored a great goal and he can be happy with that."
