Bold Solskjaer decision backfires

MANCHESTER United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's will be rueing his decision to allow Bruno Fernandes to continue with penalty taking duties rather than Cristiano Ronaldo after the crucial miss in time added in the match against Aston Villa on Saturday.

That miss proved extremely costly as Villa won the match 1-0.

More importantly Solskjaer is now under immense pressure and anything other than a win in their next Champions League match against Villarreal on Wednesday could well see the end of his reign at United.

Many had expected Ronaldo to take the spot kick which Fernandes blazed over the bar.

It's the second straight loss for United who had also lost to West Ham by a similar margin in the League Cup in midweek.

Fernandes has been the regular penalty taker since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.

Fernandes' late miss from the spot came hot off the heels of Solskjaer's comments accusing Jurgen Klopp of influencing referee's decisions not to give penalties to United.

“We just have to hope we get what we deserve,” said the United boss prior to the Villa game. “We should have had three penalties in the last two games.

“There was a certain manager who worried about us getting penalties last year and after that the decisions were difficult to give." - Agencies, September 26, 2021
