Villarreal defender Pau Torres has explained rejecting Tottenham over the summer.

Torres says he turned down a move to Tottenham in the summer because he was determined to play in the Champions League for his hometown club ahead of next year's World Cup.

"In the end I found playing the Champions League with my hometown club more attractive," said the £50m-rated Spain international, who helped Villarreal overcome Manchester United in last season's Europa League final, in an interview with El Confidencial.

"This year, the national team has important aims and when you make changes, you don't know how they will go. It was clear to me that it was a year to enjoy the Champions League with Villarreal, near my family."

Asked if he ever felt pressured by Villarreal to accept Tottenham's offer, Torres added: "At no moment. From minute one, they told me that they would respect whatever I decided.

"I am very happy at home. I have a contract until 2024 and we will see what's best for everyone."
