Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended benching Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba for today's clash with Everton.

Before the international break, Solskjaer has chosen to leave both stars out of his starting XI.

Solskjaer justified the changes, stating: "On Wednesday night [United played Villarreal) we had a lot of emotional and physical strain, so we need to make some changes to be fresher when the game starts.

"The start will be very important. We have other good players too, I believe that this team will respond well."

The starting XI, with Bruno Fernandes as captain, is as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Varane and Shaw; Fred and McTominay; Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes and Martial; Cavani.
