England have been held to a 1-1 draw by Hungary in their World Cup qualifier at Wembley.

The match was marred by crowd violence involving Hungary fans, who jeered England's players and protested against taking the knee before clashing with police and stewards.

The visitors took a surprise lead when Roland Sallai beat Jordan Pickford from the penalty spot following a challenge from Luke Shaw on Loic Nego.

The Three Lions found themselves back level before half-time as John Stones turned in at the far post after Phil Foden's free-kick was flicked on.

Hungary held on to secure a point while England remain three points clear at the top of Group I.

Speaking after the game, Southgate said: "I don't think we played at the level we have done and Hungary defended very well. We didn't do enough to win the game.

"I don't know if subconsciously we thought this was going to be an easier game because we beat them comfortably in September but they've been very good defensively right through the summer. In the first few minutes we were taking heavy touches and colliding into tackles. We didn't show the composure and quality that we have done generally."
