Former Liverpool star Didi Hamann would like to see the club sign another midfielder to replace Georginio Wijnaldum when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Netherlands international Wijnaldum joined PSG on a free transfer this past summer, ending his five-year association with Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp wanted to keep the 30-year-old but Liverpool could not match the salary package offered by the Parisians, reportedly worth £165,000 a week.

Wijnaldum says goodbye to Liverpool

The Reds defied expectations by failing to sign another midfielder to replace Wijnaldum as Klopp has instead relied on the likes of Curtis Jones and Naby Keita.

Speaking to TribalFootball.com, on behalf of FreeSuperTips, former Reds star Hamann still thinks the club should recruit someone like Wijnaldum in the winter transfer window.

"You always have to look at the owners because they don't want to spend stupid money on players," said Hamann, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005.

"You have to look at what Klopp has done in the past, he sold Coutinho for £140million and one or two others for decent price tags.

"The net spend will be a lot less compared to other teams, but you have to credit Klopp for what he's done at Liverpool.

Wijnaldum in action for his new club

"If the owners say there isn't much money to spend on transfers, then you just have to accept it.

"I think they could do with another player because Wijnaldum was a huge player.

"He was very reliable, and he chipped in with a lot of goals, so I do think they should look to bring somebody in, in January."

Wijnaldum played an important role in the Merseyside club's recent triumphs in the Premier League and Champions League.

So far things haven't gone as planned for Wijnaldum in Paris as he has failed to start in their last seven matches across all competitions.

Conversely, Liverpool are yet to lose in seven league matches this season and sit second on the Premier League table with 15 points.
