MILAN – Former Inter Milan head, Antonio Conte, will consider replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager provided that the Red Devils sign-up Inter Milan defender, Stefan De Vrij, according to a report from Football 365.
Although the football manager has been linked with the managerial role at Old Trafford for a few weeks now following Manchester United’s slow start to the season, speculation has really ramped up after the Red Devils’ humiliating 5-0 defeat to arch-rivals, Liverpool, on Sunday.
Respected journalist, Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Antonio is “ready to accept” the United job but that there has been “no official talks”, adds that the Red Devils haven’t decided whether to sack Ole or not.
According to Italian publication, Corriere della Sera, Antonio would be the “right solution” for United and that he would “make an exception” to not taking jobs part way through the season.
Meanwhile, Inter Live claims that before Antonio commits to the job, the former footballer has a list of demands that needs to be fulfilled by the Premier League club, and that the Italian “would be ready to accept a proposal” and “would be willing to negotiate” a move to Old Trafford “only under certain conditions”.
It seems that Antonio wants the “purchase of a loyal player from Inter as early as January” and that man in question being Dutch centre-back, Stefan De Vrij.
However, former United defender, Gary Neville, has claimed that Antonio would be a poor fit for the Red Devils should the team decide to replace Ole.
“They won’t bring a hitman in again. A hitman who comes in and does a job for two years,” Gary said on Sky Sports.
“(Antonio) Conte’s available but I wouldn’t bring him to Manchester United. I wouldn’t bring him here now, I wouldn’t.
“I don’t think Antonio Conte is a fit for Manchester United. I don’t think he’s a fit. I might be wrong, they might bring him here tomorrow and I’d get behind him.
“We’ve seen a coach with a specific style, like Louis van Gaal, didn’t work here. I’m not saying there isn’t a manager who can come to Manchester United and do well.” – Agencies, October 28, 2021
