Barcelona president Joan Laporta admits they're in talks to appoint Al Sadd coach Xavi.

Laporta waxed lyrical about Xavi Hernandez during Sergi Barjuan's presentation as Barcelona interim coach on Friday.

The decision to sack Ronald Koeman arrived late on Wednesday night, with Laporta taking the decision to promote Barjuan from the B team on a temporary basis on Thursday, with talks currently underway between Barcelona and Al Sadd boss Xavi.

"Good, very good. I have very good references from people who are close to him," Laporta responded when asked about what he thinks of Xavi the coach.

"I speak with him often. Two months ago, when we gave backing to Koeman, I spoke to Xavi. I know what he thinks of the team, his opinions and what he thinks needs to be done."

There is a hope at Barcelona that they can conclude the arrival of Xavi in time for him to be in charge for their crucial Champions League group-stage match away at Dynamo Kyiv next Tuesday, November 2, but Laporta refused to confirm if that will be the case.

"The important game is Alaves. I think we're still in LaLiga and we can't fall behind. LaLiga is still wide open," Laporta noted.

"Tuesday's game is extremely important. The person who will sit on the bench in Kyiv, in principle, will be Sergi."
