French pundit Daniel Riolo has jumped to the defence of PSG striker Kylian Mbappe.

Off contract in June, Mbappe has upset many PSG fans by declaring he wanted to leave last summer for Real Madrid, only for the club to block him.

But Riolo told RMC: "Couldn't we come out of the thinking, which looks like the calculations of petty politicians, and consider that the guy is saying what he wants to say in all sincerity? That he is above average, that he is ready to assume, that he will respond on the pitch as he has been doing since the start of the season because there are a bunch of guys who would not be not up to the task given the circumstances.

"There he is in the middle of the two other stars and he's good ... And he's even better than the other two since the start of the season. He hasn't disappeared from the Parisian game, I'm sure the guy will do his best throughout the season even if he has to leave. But can we get out of the political calculus that says he shouldn't have done this interview at that time?"
