Chelsea have progressed to Carabao Cup quarter-finals as they beat Premier League rivals Southampton on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Kai Havertz put Chelsea ahead just before half-time, heading past Fraser Forster for his third goal of the season.

Thomas Tuchel brought in six changes from the 7-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday.

And the Blues back-up players almost let down their manager when Che Adams stabbed in from close range to send the game to penalties.

Mason Mount and Theo Walcott both missed penalties early in the shootout, but Will Smallbone's horrible skied spot-kick proved the difference.

Reece James stepped up to convert the decisive penalty that booked Chelsea's place in the final eight.
