Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants Xavi to return to succeed the sacked Ronald Koeman.
Rayo Vallecano's victory over Barca last night saw coach Koeman sacked.
Sport says Laporta has settled on Al Sadd coach Xavi as the Dutchman's replacement.
It's suggested Xavi's contract with the Qataris, signed only earlier this year, carries a knockdown €1m buyout clause.
Negotiations are already underway, with Xavi reaching an agreement with Laporta on his backroom staff, with brother Óscar, Sergio Alegre as assistant and fitness coach Iván Torres to all follow him should they find agreement.
