Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has called on Steve Bruce to takeover as interim manager.

United are pushing forward with plans to hire an interim boss after PSG rebuked their approach for Mauricio Pochettino.

Bruce was recently sacked by Newcastle and Schmeichel thinks his former United teammate could do the job.

Speaking on CBS Sport, the former United goalkeeper said: "I just like the idea, if it is an interim, get somebody who knows the club. Get somebody who is known by the club as well.

"Somebody like Steve Bruce, that would be fantastic.

"I would love to have somebody who comes in now to put pressure on the players.

"A new voice, get them out there performing. Without making massive changes in style, or system.

"You have to take small steps, you can't just jump straight in and say we are going to play a pressing game.

"You can't do that, the first thing you have to do is give confidence to everybody in the team."

Asked whether he would take the role himself, Schmeichel replied: "Of course I would do it. I would do anything for that club. I think Ronaldo would definitely listen to a goalkeeper."

Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has reportedly been contacted about joining the club on a short-term basis.

Laurent Blanc and Ralf Rangnick are also being linked with the interim job.
