Former Aston Villa and Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton believes manager Steven Gerrard will assess the squad at Villa Park.
Houghton doesn't expect Gerrard to make instant changes.
He said: "Everyone wants to play it out from the back, they think that's the only way you can play football. But you've got to find the ways and means to win matches and Steven will look at that.
"He's got a winning mentality.
"He'll appraise the squad he's got, have a look at what works, what doesn't work, and what's best for them. What areas should they be getting the ball into? He'll be looking at every facet of Aston Villa as a side, what makes them work and where they can do better."
