It's being claimed Paul Pogba approached Manchester United about signing a new contract in 2019 - only to be rejected.

That's according to the Daily Mail, which are reporting Pogba's account of the contractual impasse threatening his long-term future at Old Trafford. There is irritation inside the midfielder's camp over a growing narrative that he is holding the club to ransom.

There have been claims Pogba always intended to secure a lucrative Bosman transfer away from Old Trafford - but the player's inner circle have strongly refuted those assertions, insisting the midfielder never wanted to become a free agent.

Indeed, he remains open to signing an extension, with Pogba said to be suspicious of the origin of claims he has already decided to leave.

In 2019, United decided against offering him a new deal, instead opting to trigger a 12-month option on his existing contract in 2020.

Since then United have made one formal extension offer to Pogba, which was made earlier this summer.

The midfielder informed the club he did not wish to sign that specific deal and is waiting for United to make another offer. As of yet, the club are yet to return with a second offer.
