
KUALA LUMPUR – Melaka police will open an investigation a viral picture of RM50 notes attached to food packages.
In a statement released by state police headquarters today, Melaka Criminal Investigation Department chief Azlan Abu said a video associated with the event revealed that the food packages were merely distributed to elderly folk.
“There were no political activities, logos, or elements in the recorded video,” he said, adding that no police reports have been made so far regarding the incident.
Nonetheless, Azlan said an investigation will be made under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 that carries a fine of not more than RM50,000, imprisonment for up to a year, or both, if convicted.
He said between October 25 and November 11, a total of 16 investigation papers have been opened, and five compounds handed out relating to the upcoming Melaka elections.
Azlan reminded the public to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that strict action will be taken against those who commit such offences.
