Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher could not resist a dig at Manchester United after their 2-0 win in the Champions League over Villarreal.

The Red Devils are through to the knockout stages after an away win in Spain, coupled with Atalanta drawing against Young Boys in the other game in the group on Tuesday.

United were managed by interim boss Michael Carrick, following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday.

Post-game, Carargher wrote on Twitter, mimicking a statement Rio Ferdinand had made when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was excelling as caretaker after the sacking of Jose Mourinho in 2018/2019:

"Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out, put it on the table & let him sign it," Carragher wrote.

"Let him write whatever numbers he wants, let him sign the contract. Carrick's at the wheel man!"
