It will be a JDT-Melaka United Malaysia Cup final: ex-national striker

KOTA BHARU − Legendary 90s national striker Mohd Hashim Mustapha predicts it will be a Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT)-Melaka United FC final in the Malaysia Cup.

Mohd Hashim, who is 55 now, believes that the two teams were the favourites to battle it out for the prestigious trophy based on their performance in this season’s Super League and the Malaysia Cup thus far.

“As we all know, JDT are currently the most powerful football team in the country because they have several national players besides a modern tactical approach that has been instilled by their coach.

“On the other hand, Melaka United are a new team that can give others a run for their money based on their current form and quality of play by their players,” he told Bernama here today.

The Golden Boots winner in 1993 and 1994 said the Malaysia Cup semi-finals second leg matches tomorrow were a “must watch” as it would be a do-or-die battle for the teams involved.

“Both JDT and Melaka United hold the advantage because they will be playing at home and all they need is a goalless draw.

“However, it is unlikely they would ‘park the bus’ (defend all the way) for 90 minutes because if Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur get to score, it will be a different story altogether,” he said.

In the semi-finals first leg on November 23, both the JDT-Terengganu and Melaka United- KL City matches ended in 1-1 draws.

The 2021 Malaysia Cup final is on November 30.
