Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings says the players are buying into the methods of new boss Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool legend took over from Dean Smith after choosing to leave his post at Rangers in Scotland midseason.

Smith, who is now at Norwich City, had left Villa flirting with the relegation places after a poor start to the season.

They won their first game under Gerrard, a 2-0 success over Brighton.

Mings said: "It has felt different ever since the new gaffer has come in. New ideas, everyone has bought into it.

"We have not had long to work on perfecting the ideas the manager is trying to get over to us, but I think we gave it a good go today.

"Everyone has bought into it so far, and I think you saw it in the performance, the willingness to work as a team and really work for each other. This was a step forward, and we have to keep it going."
