The visitors were ahead in the first-half through Shola Shoretire. Alvaro Fernandez made an early advance down the flank and his cut-back found an unmarked Omari Forson, who had time to control the ball before teeing up Shoretire to sweep home.
United were soon 2-0 ahead via Anthony Elanga.
A deep free-kick from the Swede evaded everyone on its way into the far corner to double the lead.
Atalanta pulled a goal back before halftime via a Guillaume Renault penalty. And despite a competitive second-half, the scoreline remained 2-1 in United's favour.
