Sacked Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is being mentioned as a replacement for Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

Gerrard is said to be "interested" in the vacant managerial role at Villa Park following Smith's sacking on Sunday afternoon.

Rangers will be searching for a new boss themselves if Gerrard takes up Villa's approach and the two clubs can agree the £3m compensation package, reported by the Daily Record as the fee that Villa must pay to start negotiations.

And former Rangers forward McCoist thinks Smith could be a solid replacement for Gerrard.

He said, “I really like Dean Smith, I do, yes. I think he's a good coach and a good manager. I would not have a problem with him being at my club."

Smith has been linked with a quick comeback to management with Norwich City reportedly keen to discuss the position left by Daniel Farke when he was also sacked over the weekend.
