Former Newcastle United chief scout Graham Carr is sorry seeing Ivan Toney now succeeding with Brentford.

Carr recommended they sign Toney when he was put up for grabs by Northampton for £250,000.

Toney, then 19, failed to make the grade in the North East but his career rocketed with a move to Peterborough and then to Brentford.

Carr told The Sun: “Ivan's turning into something of a colossus of a striker. His progress is a great reflection of his strength of character and his strength as a player.

“And I can see him really making life uncomfortable for Newcastle fans and especially their defenders.

“Howe's defenders had better ready for a bit of rough and tumble because if they're not at it, then they won't know what's hit them.

“The back four will know they've been in a game because Ivan's an aggressive striker and he'll thrive in the heat of the battle, just like Alan Shearer used to do."
