Former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce is keen on the caretaker manager's post at Old Trafford.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday morning in the aftermath of their 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Watford - which was their fifth league defeat in seven games.

Michael Carrick will take over for the next few games, before an interim manager is put in place until the end of the season.

The Athletic says former United defender Bruce would be interested in taking on the interim vacancy at Old Trafford.

Bruce has been out of work since he was sacked by Newcastle last month following the club's £305million Saudi-led takeover.

The 60-year-old believes he could help stabilise the fractured dressing room at his former club that is littered with household names.
