Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man who threatened to kill his wife for not giving him money was jailed 18 months, Friday.

Raja Yacub, 47, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the crime against his wife at 4pm on Oct 25, in front of the Grand Plaza, Putatan.

The offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution, prior to the incident, Raja’s wife was on her was to a shop when Raja asked money from her but was not given.

Raja then threatened his wife by saying “Kalau kau pulang rumah, aku kasi mati kau dan bakar semua pakaian kau (If you go home, I will kill you and burn all your clothes).”

A duty counsel applied for a lenient sentence by saying that Raja, who is married with four children, was uneducated and was under the influence of drugs when he uttered the words.

Raja was also facing another charge of taking drugs but no plea was recorded from him pending the chemist’s report.

Raja, through the duty counsel, also applied for bail on the grounds that he holds a red identity card.

Jessica ordered Raja to serve the sentence for Section 506 from the date of his arrest and ordered him to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

The court also set Dec 3 for mention of the drug case and denied him bail pending the date.

In another case, a 27-year-old man was jailed five months for trespassing into Wisma Sabah.

Mohd Azrul Dorah admitted to committing the offence along with another man, who was jailed earlier for the offence, at 2.50am on May 16.

The charge under Section 448 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to three years or fine or both, on conviction.
