Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips admits being named England Player of the Year was unexpected.

In an interview on Gaffer's YouTube channel, Phillips revealed that he never expected to play such a regular role at the Euros and his individual award capped a crazy year for the Leeds midfielder.

“It was weird. I didn't expect it all. There's a video online where Declan Rice is giving me the award and you can tell by my face that I thought he was actually playing a joke on me," Phillips admitted.

“I thought he had one of the pies in his hand and was just going to smash it straight on my face but yeah it was obviously an honour.

“I think I went into the Euros not knowing I was going to play but I had an idea that I would play some part. Then I ended up playing every single game."
