Manchester United hero Paul McGrath says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blew it not strengthening his midfield last summer.

McGrath wrote for the Sunday World: "One thing about where Ole stands now – do you remember last summer when there was this to-and-fro about whether the Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would sanction Harry Kane's transfer to Manchester City?

"That was the club chairman then. But after Antonio Conte's arrival at Tottenham, it will be the manager who will make that call should City come back in for the England captain during the January window.

"Imagine what will happen if Kane is sold against Conte's wishes – Conte will resign two minutes later and Spurs will be in utter chaos.

"But when Manchester United's bosses foisted Cristiano Ronaldo on Ole two days before the end of January, there was no report that Ole said, 'No, get me the two top defensive midfielders I need instead in the next 48 hours.'

"I've said it before and I'll say it again – would there be a queue of buyers willing to pay big money if United put any of Scott McTominay, Fred or Nemanja Matic up for sale on New Years Day?

"They are the players who are supposed to protect a haphazard defence when United come up against the best teams in England and Europe.

"Whether Ole survives this international window as the boss must be doubtful."
