Everton boss Rafa Benitez says the money of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri needs to be carefully spent.

Benitez believes Moshiri should escape criticism for a period of, largely, poor recruitment over the past five years and insists improvements must be made - otherwise the club's continued stagnation cannot be 'justified'.

"The reality is, when I met the owner and the sponsor, and the director later on, everybody was telling me that we have great ambition and everybody wants to do well to create a competitive team that could go to the stadium winning something or playing in Europe and things like that," Benitez said.

"The ambition is there.

"An owner who has spent £400m, you cannot criticise him for spending money.

"We have to be sure we are spending the money properly and then the team will be stronger and better.

"The owner, the sponsors, the director, everyone here wants to do well and wants to be successful. We have to be sure we improve things that maybe were not right. If not then you cannot justify why we were where we were, and why we are where we are, after spending, maybe, the fourth most in the last five years."
